Miscellaneous.
Provision has been made for another
telephone cable across the harbour. The capacity of the present cable is already taxed almost to the utmost, and with the continued extension of the telephone system in Kowloon and the New Territories it has become necessary to provide a new eight- core cable.
Provision has also been made for new pillar-boxes and tablets of an improved pattern for them. The stringent steps that are being taken to prevent smuggling of letters render it necessary to provide the Chinese quarters of the City and of Kowloon with these postal conveniences which at present they do not enjoy.
A sum of $1,600 has been provided for shelving the strong room of the Registration and Parcels Branch of the Post Office so that all the available space therein may be utilized tọ the fullest extent.
Item 36 is for the purchase of boundary stones under a new system whereby the stones are paid for by the Govern- ment and sold as required.
Provision has been made for railings round four statues in Royal Square in order to keep the statues in a tidy con- dition; for relaying with cement concrete the compound of the Police Station at Shaukiwan, which is of churam and consequently does not stand the wet weather well; for an extension to the Chair-coolie Shelter near the Hongkong Club; and for the installat- ion of electric lights and fans in the Colonial Secretary's Office in place of gas lights and punkahs.
Item 40 is the outcome of the introduction of elec- tric lighting in Shaukiwan, to which I have alluded under the heading "Lighting“,
As regards the provision under items 41 and 57, the substitution of electric light for the miscellaneous private illuminants in use will improve both the lighting and the atmosphere
